A little while ago Rode kindly sent us out one of their new Rode Wireless Micro microphone sets! While we’ll be doing a full review soon, here’s our initial impressions and test results.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The Rode Wireless Micro comes in a tiny box, reflecting just how small and portable this device is. Inside, you'll find:
-
A charging case (similar in size to a small SSD, about as thick as three iPhones)
-
Two wireless microphones
-
A receiver that plugs directly into your phone (USB-C or Lightning)
-
A USB-C charging cable
-
Two furry windshields (aka ‘dead cats’) for outdoor recording
The microphones themselves are incredibly small and lightweight, equipped with a clip and a magnet for easy attachment. Unlike some competing models, Rode has kept the design minimalist and discreet, with no visible logos, meaning the mic blends well into clothing.

Quick Audio Test – How Does It Sound?
We did a rapid indoor test to compare the iPhone’s built-in microphone with the Rode Wireless Micro, and the difference was instantly noticeable. Even in an echoey kitchen (with minimal furniture to absorb sound), the Wireless Micro produced clearer, more professional-sounding audio.
Here are some key features we noticed in our first test:
- Crisp, natural voice capture – Less background noise and clearer speech compared to built-in phone mics.
- Easy setup – The receiver plugs directly into your phone’s USB-C or Lightning port, requiring no extra cables.
- Magnetic attachment – Perfect for discreet placement, especially on darker clothing.
Final Thoughts – Is It Worth It?
Based on this first look, the Rode Wireless Micro is shaping up to be a fantastic choice for content creators, vloggers, and mobile journalists. Its compact size, ease of use, and high-quality sound make it an attractive alternative to larger wireless mic setups.
We’ll be doing a full review soon, testing it in various environments, including outdoor conditions. Stay tuned for that – and if you have any questions about the Wireless Micro, drop them in the comments!
