What the New Tariffs mean for our amazing 'USA' customers.
At Editors Keys, we love shipping our keyboards to customers around the world—especially to our fantastic friends in the USA! Recently, though, some of you have noticed unexpected extra costs when ordering from us. That’s due to something called the Trump Tariffs, and we wanted to take a moment to explain what they are, why they exist, and how they impact your order.
What Are the Trump Tariffs?
The Trump Tariffs are additional charges (a type of import duty) applied by the US government on certain products coming from overseas. These tariffs were introduced as part of a broader trade policy aimed at encouraging local manufacturing. Since part of our production process begins in China, our keyboards fall under these tariffs—even though we design and finish them in the UK and Denmark.
Where Are Editors Keys Products Made?
We’re proud of our global production process, but unfortunately, that means our keyboards are classified under these tariffs. Here’s how they’re made:
- Designed in the UK – Our team creates and refines the product in our UK office.
- Manufactured in China – The base keyboard is produced in China, giving it a Chinese country of origin under customs rules.
- Hand-Finished in Denmark – We add custom printing and final touches to the keycaps in our Denmark office.
- Stored & Shipped from the UK – Once completed, keyboards are sent to our UK warehouse and then shipped to you.
Who Has to Pay the Tariff?
Unfortunately, the tariff is charged to you, the customer, when your order enters the USA. This is a receiver tariff, meaning the import duty is paid by the person receiving the product—not by businesses in the UK, Denmark, or China.
We know this isn’t ideal, and we don’t receive any of this money—it goes straight to US customs. The tariffs were originally designed to make imported goods from China more expensive, but in reality, they can also make it harder for businesses like ours to sell to customers like you.
Why Do Tariffs Exist?
Governments introduce tariffs like these for various reasons, including encouraging local manufacturing and protecting domestic industries. We understand that different economic strategies are tested over time, and it’s important to find a balance. While we respect the idea of strengthening local production, we also believe in fair and open trade that doesn’t place unnecessary costs on consumers. Our hope is that future policies can support both businesses and customers, making cross-border trade smoother for everyone.
How Much Is the Tariff?
The tariff amount varies depending on the product but typically ranges from 7% to 25% of the product’s value. US customs determines the final charge when your order arrives. In some cases, customers may not be charged at all, but it’s best to be prepared just in case.
What’s the Solution?
We’d love to see these tariffs lifted in the future to make it easier for you to get the products you love without additional costs. In the meantime, here are a few things that might help:
- Check US customs rules before ordering so you’re aware of any potential charges.
- Consider bundling orders to reduce overall shipping and handling costs.
- Stay updated—if any policies change, we’ll let you know right away!
- Editors Keys Exploring US production – Since we have close ties to the USA, we’re actively looking at setting up a warehouse and production facility in the US. If tariffs continue, we may be able to offer a Made in America version of our keyboards in the future!
